Our guest today is bestselling author and performance coach, Stefan Falk.   I first heard about Stefan when Dan Pink talked about him in the book DRIVE. (BTW: Drive is one of my favorite books of freeeegin’ all time!)

Dan pointed to his unique approach to leadership… and specifically coaching and delivering performance reviews at Green Cargo… as a key way to motivate people in the RIGHT way.  Well… fast forward a few years… and Stefan has written his own book called “Intrinsic Motivation - Learn to LOVE your work and succeed as never before.” So we’re going to dig into that!

Stefan is an internationally recognized leadership and human performance expert.

He’s been a C-suite leader at several global companies and has been a part of 4 successful turnarounds and generated billions of dollars in revenue.

He’s a McKinsey & Company alumnus… and as an executive coach who’s helped thousands of leaders and client organizations across North America and Europe.

We’re doing a DEEP DIVE on the Christmas story.  More specifically… we’re talking about a vantage point on a story that may feel “familiar,” BUT still can have some surprises to it!

Specifically, we’re going to take a deeper look at the story tucked in Matthew 1 and 2 of the New Testament of the Bible.  Spoiler Alert: I uncovered some eye-opening elements of the story I’d never seen or thought about before!.  And wow… were they ever good surprises!  Whether you’re a big fan of reading the Bible or not… this episode has something for you.

At the VERY least… you’ll hear some things you can use to impress your friends at Christmas parties!  But… if you listen in and stay open… I think you might really appreciate unwrapping these surprise gifts as much as I did!  So let’s get to this!

MORE ABOUT Coach Darrell Mudra:

Darrell E. Mudra was an American football coach and his nickname was "Dr. Victory."

He served as the head football coach at:

Adams State College (1959–1962),

North Dakota State University (1963–1965)

University of Arizona (1967–1968)

Western Illinois University (1969–1973)

Florida State University (1974–1975)

Eastern Illinois University (1978–1982),

and the University of Northern Iowa (1983–1987)

His career college football record of 200–81–4.

And since I attended the University of Northern Iowa, I will share a little of his story from UNI.

Seeking to turn around another struggling program, Mudra resigned from Eastern Illinois in December 1982 to accept the head coaching position with the University of Northern Iowa.  They had finished their previous season with a 4–6–1 record. BUT under Mudra, the Panthers went on to win the Gateway Football Conference in their 1985 and 1987 seasons.

Get THIS!: He led the Panthers to the NCAA Division I-AA semifinals TWICE!

Mudra was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2000.

George McGraw is joining us. He’s a leading expert on water and sanitation in the United States and around the world. He’s the Founder & CEO of DigDeep which is the only WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene) organization solely focused on the USA.

Now… that might seem weird… but did you realize that over 2.2 million Americans live without clean tap water or without a toilet in their homes? Amazing… right?

George McGraw is hoping to dramatically change that stat… within his lifetime!

Under George’s leadership… DigDeep has grown to serve remote areas in the US… such as the Navajo Nation, which spans New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah), in other areas in Appalachia and Texas.  In addition to his work with DigDeep… George is an avid speaker and writer. He’s guest lectured at universities around the world and spoken at events hosted by WeDay, the Atlantic and Ford Motor Company and he’s been published by the New York Times, the Nation and several law reviews.

Travis Crutcher is back. THIS time we’re talking about Professional SPEAKING. More specifically… we’re digging into 6 things we wish we’d known earlier… when it comes to getting paid to speak… and being a professional speaker.

If you’re a Dream Think Doer… there is a VERY good chance… you’ve got a message the world needs to hear!  Because you’re taking time out of your week… to listen to stories and strategies that help you to dream bigger… think better… and do more.  You’re investing in yourself.  And my guess is… you also want to see OTHERS dream bigger… think better and do more!

That means… you’ve got a message to share.  You’ve got stories and strategies in you that need to get out… because they can help other people!  So let’s get you some specific strategies to help make that happen!

INFO ABOUT MITCH’S NEXT-LEVEL SPEAKER LIVE 2022!

Click here: www.mitchmatthews.com/nextlevelspeaker to find out more about this LIVE 3-day event with Mitch.  If you’ve got a message in you the world needs to hear… if you’ve got a heart for speaking and it’s time to get paid for that message… if you want to make a positive impact on the world and you know it’s time to take it to the “Next Level” then join us!

Travis’s Podcast: Above Average Podcast

MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Now… some of you have NO interest in being a PAID professional speaker… because… maybe… you don’t really like public speaking.  Heck… that’s understandable… because studies show that more people are afraid of public speaking then they are of dying!  So yeah… if you bristle at the thought of being a speaker… let alone a PAID speaker… you’re not alone.

BUT… what if?

What if you could get over that fear… and you could step in front of a group of people… and bless their socks off?  What if… the words you shared shifted people’s lives?  What if… something you said inspired someone to make a change they’ve wanted to make or live more of the life they were meant to live?  What if?

I think everyone can learn strategies to overcome fear… and then speak more effectively… and even have fun with it!

But I also believe that some of you should get paid well to do that too!

And THAT might be closer at hand than you might think!

Heck… we’ve got a lot of listeners that are paid speakers… and if that’s you… WELL DONE!

BUT with today’s episode… I wanted to get to brass tacks and give you even more to help you take your ideas and your abilities to speak to the next level… and… if you chose… to help you get PAID well as a speaker!

To do that… I’ve enlisted my friend Travis Crutcher!

I’m betting you remember Travis from episode 344… AND 352.

Travis is a Success Coach and Speaker who helps dynamic people get clarity, increase impact, and live a life they love!  Now… he also has a podcast called the Above Average Podcast… which he hosts with his amazing bride Jess… and they’ve gotten their show into the top 1% of all podcasts in a very short time!  He’s a Retired Army Ranger and he spent some time in the corporate space as an executive too.

A few years ago… Travis joined Acceleration… my mastermind for coaches and speakers… and he launched his dream business and now he’s killing it!  And a big part of that is being a PAID speaker… and he’s getting paid well to speak to audiences and make a big impact!

By the way… he’s such a leader… and his business is growing like crazy… so he’s now helping me to run Acceleration and I’m loving it!

With this episode… we’re diving into speaking and specifically 6 things we wish we’d known earlier when it comes to speaking and being PAID to be a speaker.  And we’re going to talk about heart stuff… mental stuff… business strategy and life strategy and I think you’re going to dig it!

Especially if you’re wanting to make an impact on the world in some small or big way… and potentially get paid well to do it!

I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU:

How about YOU!?  What stood out to you from this conversation?

Also, let me know if you have questions (big or small) about being a speaker!  I want to hear from you!!!

And PLEASE share this very fun/powerful episode with someone who YOU think would appreciate it and/or might be needing it… right now!  They’ll thank you!

Know I’m rooting for you!

LISA EVEN is joining us!  She describes herself as a corporate-world junkie… turned entrepreneur. Lisa offers one-on-one coaching, keynote speaking and workshops… with the goal of helping individuals and organizations to have good ripple effect!

She grew up in a small town in Iowa… and she credits a lot of her success to the things she learned schlepping tables at a little cafe… and she said she didn’t even know how some of THOSE things prepped her to lead large teams in the corporate space…

In full disclosure… she’s a coaching client of mine and we’ve been working together over this past year.  I tell you this because THAT has given me a front row seat to the awesome things she’s been up to and how she LIVES her brand… by creating a good ripple effect everywhere she goes!  Two more fun facts… Lisa has a monthly joy calendar and she’s on a mission to meet 1 million people.

Howard Berger and Marshal Julius are with us!  You probably remember Howard from episodes 74 and 284. He’s the co-founder of the KNB EFX Group AND he’s an academy award and emmy award winning special effects artist.  It’s hard to do this guy justice… because he’s been involved with over 800 feature films and television shows. He’s worked with some of the biggest names in show business.

He and his business partner Greg Nicotero are responsible for allllll of the zombies in the Walking Dead. He’s done All of Quentin Tarantino’s movies.

He’s Mark Wahlberg’s go-to guy for special effects.  He and his team did the Chronicles of Narnia… for which they won the Academy Award for Best Make Up. He got another academy nomination for his work on HITCHCOCK.  And just about every horror movie that’s scared the crap out of you over the past 20 to 30 years… there’s a VERY good chance Howard had something to do with it.  And just try to wrap your mind around this… for ONE tv show… The Orville… they have created over 1000 designs…  that’s just ONE show!!!

Now… let’s talk about Marshall Julius.  I’d classify him as a modern day renaissance man!  He’s an author… he’s an artist.  By the way… his art has been purchased and shared around the world. He kills it on the Twitters and most importantly… he’s made an impressive career and business out of being a professional fan and self-proclaimed nerd.  Now THAT’s the best… when you can make a career out of something you love!

Okay… so we’re talking today… because these two long-time friends have teamed up to write one of the most anticipated and fascinating books written for film fans and geeks… called, Masters of Make-Up Effects: A Century of Practical Magic.  It’s already a #1 new release and it doesn’t come out until next month!!!

We’re going to be talking about the book… and some of the great stories that they remembered and uncovered as they wrote it.  I can’t wait for this… so let’s get to it!

And Paul… did not disappoint!  Wow!  We talk about everything from what’s the difference between happiness and joy… but more importantly… how Paul walks in a true sense of joy… almost constantly. We talk about family relationships and the importance of grace (and some specific “how-tos” to achieve it more often).  Plus, we dive into some of YOUR questions!

Everything from “What’s something that you wish you’d done differently with the Shack (the 24M+ bestseller)?” to… “How did you craft the Trinity as you were writing the book?” to… “What’s next?” to… “How do you handle criticism?” and SOOOO much more.  I think you’re going to love it!  So let’s get to it!

MORE ON THE EPISODE:

When William Paul Young turned 50, his wife Kim asked him to write down some notes about his outlook on God, life, love and grace.  It was supposed to be for their kids.

He obliged.  (He did it while on a train as he commuted to his 3 different jobs.)  But those “notes” turned into a book that became the international bestseller, ‘The Shack.’

This week, I talk with Paul about his experiences with writing the book (and his 3 other bestsellers).  But more importantly… we talk about his outlook on grace, love, the pressures of life, God, facing criticism and controversy… and we even talk about what he’s working on next.

Plus… we answer a number of YOUR questions!

May 25, 2022
In this MICRO-episode… we’re digging into the strategy of creating what we call, an “EXPERIENCE LIST.”  This is for EVERYBODY… but especially with those folks who wrestle with writing down their dreams and goals.  And trust me… that’s a LOT of people.  Yes… we ALL know that writing down our goals is important and the studies have shown that.  BUT… for a lot of people… that feels intimidating and/or overwhelming.  Plus, it can cause an inner-wrestling match over whether something qualifies as a “big dream” or an “important goal” or whether it’s as cool as someone else’s dream or a “SMART goal.”  Well… screw that noise!  Nope… we’re going to use a different word to guide us.  Yup… we’re going to ask, “What are some EXPERIENCES… (big or small) I’d like to have in my lifetime?”  And with that… you’ll create your EXPERIENCE LIST.  Oh… and this is a MICRO-episode… because it’s less than 15 minutes!!!  So… let’s get to it!

MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE:

I’m getting ready to take a couple of weeks off for our younger son's graduation in LA.  Melissa and I are heading out to celebrate with him and have some great “experiences” along the way!

Plus, we’ve set some specific time aside to create a NEW “Experience List.”

So I was inspired to share an idea with you!

BACKGROUND:

Recently at an event, someone approached me after my keynote.  It was a woman in her mid-thirties.  She looked smart, successful and put-together but she quickly admitted she was  wrestling with writing down any dreams and goals because she wasn't sure if her dreams were BIG enough and she wasn't sure their goals were SMART enough.

She was caught in something I call the “SMART Trap” because she wasn't sure if the ideas that were coming to her head were actually goals because she didn’t know if they were specific enough... or measurable... or realistic... or… you get the picture.  As a result…   she felt stuck.  And she was in the “COMPARISON Trap” because she was trying to compare the size and the validity of her dreams to others in the room.

Ever been there?  I sure have!

So, instead of her trying to come up with “Dreams” or “goals,” I suggested a different question.

Here’s the question:

What are some “experiences” you would like to have?

I’ve found that “EXPERIENCE” is a lower pressure word.

So instead of asking about your DREAMS or you GOALS, ask yourself about the kinds of experiences you’d like to have in your lifetime.

Because… experiences matter!

“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it.

To reach out eagerly and without fear

for new and richer experiences.”

- Eleanor Roosevelt

HOMEWORK:

  • STEP 1: Ask... what kind of experiences (big or small) would I like to have?
  • STEP 2: List at least 10

"I think we should count our age by number of life experiences we've had instead of years!”

- Unknown

  • I want to find two great friends and really treasure them

Antonio Neves joins us BUT this time… we’re flipping the mics. That’s right!  Tony is interviewing Mitch about what he’s learned as he’s approaching 365 episodes of Dream Think Do!  It’s a fun, inspiring and eye-opening conversation because Tony is not only a bestselling author and speaker, it’s an award-winning journalist who has interviewed world leaders, celebrities and entrepreneurs from around the world.  Mitch didn’t know what questions were going to be asked (other than some awesome questions Dream Think Do listeners submitted when they heard about the interview).  Antonio went deep into the archives to draw out some great behind the scenes stories and powerful insights from Mitch.  Plus, the LAST question really surprised Mitch and brought some personal revelation that brought ALL the emotions.  So listen in and be ready to get inspired to climb YOUR mountains, define those important milestones in YOUR life… and find the right ways to stick with YOUR dreams!

YOUR QUESTIONS:

Now, we’d asked if DREAM THINK DOers wanted to submit any questions and you guys responded with some GREAT ones.

From those, Antonio and I chose the following questions:

“Ok, here we go. I love love love my podcast. In fact, I am creating a second and am a co-host on another. My question is, when there is momentum and excitement it is easy to keep on going. What happens when the juices dry up a bit? How do you get your mojo back?” - Gail Craft

“Over the time I have gotten to know you listening to your show, I would say (and I know many agree) that you are gifted with wisdom. What would you say has been a key to growing in wisdom for you that a younger dream think doer could implement?”

- Beth Medley

“People are constantly suggesting that I start a podcast, but the market is so saturated that I don’t think I have much value to add. What made you take the leap? Did you start by just interviewing friends and colleagues?” - Kim Harden

But other than these 3… I didn’t know the questions Antonio was going to ask.  So it felt like we were operating without a net.  BUT I trust Tony… so we went for it.  And it was a blast!

We talked about things like:

  • PERSISTENCE… and how to stick with something (even when you’re tired)
  • SURPRISES along the way… and some of the unexpected gifts of pursuing dreams
  • SETBACKS… because they’re going to come… and how do you get back up
  • FEAR… and how to overcome it in power but simple ways

But one of my favorite questions unearthed a story about some wisdom my bride Melissa offered me early on.  It’s something that helped me to set the course for my podcast but it’s also something that’s helped me live a happier and bolder life!  I can’t wait for you to hear THAT one.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

How about YOU!?  What stood out to you from Tony’s questions and the awesome questions from other DREAM THINK DO listeners?

More importantly… what’s something that stuck with you?

We’re talking with Ana Gabriel Mann and John David Mann.  Ana earned her degree in clinical psychology before going on to serve as an educator, therapist, corporate trainer, speaker, and coach. Her hubby is John is an award-winning author… who’s co-written more than 30 books! That list includes four New York Times bestsellers and five national bestsellers. I have to say that one of my absolute favorites was his His classic parable called The Go-Giver which he co-authored with Bob Burg who’s been on DREAM THINK DO twice! I’ve been wanting to have these two on the show for as long as I can remember!  Partly… because The Go-Giver helped to save my career a number of years ago.  And partly because this couple are a powerhouse!  I’m soooooooo happy to say that they’ve written a book together called “The Go-Giver Marriage” and it’s sooooooo good.  We’re going to talk about it and so much more… so let’s get to this!

Apr 27, 2022
Welcome to episode 360 where we’re talking about the GRACE to RESET!  Earlier this year, we OFFICIALLY declared the 3rd week of January is “RESET WEEK!” (link) That’s right!  We said that “RESET WEEK” was specifically designed to help us to get clear on our goals and new habits and RESTART the year in the right way!  Well… it's been one of our most downloaded episodes in 2022 so far.  But more importantly… it's sparked SO many conversations on the subject and the importance of giving yourself permission to have a RESET WEEK once and a while!

Now, when I talked about all of this in episode 246, we talked about this being a one time of year thing.  And that makes sense.  It’s good and healthy to set a specific time to think about the stuff you want to do… accomplish and experience.

BUT… here's the KICKER.  A LOT of people have said that they've actually listened to that episode later in the year.  Like in February... March... or April and they've said... “THIS week is the best week to RESET,” because it's the week I’m in!”  And… hey… I couldn't agree more!

So with this short episode... we're going to REVISIT the concept of RESET WEEK and invite you to give yourself some grace to make THIS week... (no matter when the flip you're listening to this)... your RESET WEEK.  And to give yourself a little grace as you do!  So… let’s get to this!

RELATED DREAM THINK DO EPISODES:

TWO THINGS WITH THIS SHORT EPISODE:

  • GRACE
  • AND... we're going to modify the questions for THIS RESET WEEK.

Man... I don't know about you... but although I'm super glad to see numbers improving every day... there's still a true residue that's on sooooo many people right now.  Including me.

  • I'm a pretty positive guy... but I've felt it easier to get bummed out and burned out and freaked out.
  • Am I alone on this?
  • We've got to give ourselves a little space and a LOT of grace.
  • That's got me thinking a lot about GRACE lately.

LET’S TALK ABOUT GRACE:

  • Definition of grace (noun):

1a: unmerited divine assistance given to humans for their regeneration or sanctification

1b: a virtue coming from God

  • Definition of grace (verb):

"Grace means having an effortless disposition for generosity, helpfulness, and goodwill towards others."

MORE QUOTES:

"Grace is the voice that calls us to change

and then gives us the power to pull it off."

- Max Lucado

"GRACE means that all of your mistakes now

serve a purpose instead of serving shame."

- Brene Brown

For me…

“Grace is giving yourself space to feel loved

AND to offer some love to others and yourself.

And THEN… and only then…

take another step forward.”

Mitch Matthews

“The more grace we have,

the less we shall think of ourselves,

for grace, like like reveals our impurity.”

- Charles Spurgeon

"I'm firmly inside the day's grace

in the embrace of relentless affection

where all is well

and joy is a constant companion."

- William Paul Young - Episode 229

Joy as a Constant Companion with Paul Young www.mitchmatthews.com/229

No fear.  No future tripping.  I'm soundly in the grace for the day.

NOW… from a place of grace… let’s talk about the questions we posed in 346.

THE MODIFIED QUESTIONS FOR THIS RESET WEEK:

  • Question 1: What’s something you want to give yourself PERMISSION to be a NOVICE at… THIS WEEK?
  • Question 2: What’s something you want to BE more THIS WEEK?
  • Question 3: What’s something you want to change or tweak THIS WEEK?

QUESTION 1:

What's something you want to give yourself the permission to be NEW at this week?

  • Silly example: Downton Abby
  • Trying something new with cooking
  • The layout of your office
  • Spiritual:
    • Prayer
    • Meditation
    • Scripture
  • Career:
    • Sign up for a class…
    • Read a book and actually TRY something
  • Life:
    • Sign up for a class
    • Give yourself some space

REMEMBER:

“If you want something you’ve never had,

then you’ve got to do things you’ve never done!”  - Unknown

QUESTION 2: What do you want to BE more... this week?

Examples:

  • Brave
  • Loving
  • Innovative
  • Strong
  • Hope-filled
  • Assertive
  • Faithful
  • Faith-filled
  • Generous
  • Present
  • Peaceful
  • Kind

Write it down somewhere you want to be reminded of it... and just BE that.

EXAMPLE: Generous

  • money...
  • time...
  • Smile

"Every time you smile at someone,

it's an act of LOVE.

A gift to that person, a beautiful thing."

- Mother Teresa

Question 3: What’s something you want to change or tweak this week?

EXAMPLE from MY week: Holding just a bit more loosely to my day

  • I had a podcast guest cancel due to illness...
  • Simple... I went for a hike at different time

Examples:

  • Focus on being in the moment more
  • Focus on learning as opposed to judging (you or others)
  • Focus on progress not perfection
  • Focus on bringing encouragement to others
  • Focus on giving yourself some space

CALL TO ACTION:

  • INVITE A FRIEND
  • Give yourself some GRACE to not do it perfectly
  • THE MODIFIED QUESTIONS FOR THIS RESET WEEK:
    • Question 1: What’s something you want to give yourself PERMISSION to be a NOVICE at… THIS WEEK?
    • Question 2: What’s something you want to BE more… THIS WEEK?
    • Question 3: What’s something you want to change or tweak… THIS WEEK?
  • Do it… WITH GRACE!

You in?  I hope so!  Let’s reset… and have an awesome week.  And then we’ll have a BUNCH of awesome weeks… and that will make for an INCREDIBLE year!

Apr 20, 2022
We’re answering the question, “Should YOU be a life coach?” this week.  Why?  Well, according to a recent study, almost half of employees in the US are looking for a new job or plan to soon.   Which suggests that the curious pandemic-era phenomenon known as the “Great Resignation” is continuing into 2022. Specifically, 44% of employees now consider themselves “job seekers,” according to Willis Towers Watson's 2022 Global Benefits Attitudes Survey.

Wow.  That blew me away.  How about you?  As a part of all of this, I’ve had more and more people ask me whether they should and/or could become a life coach.  So, I wanted to dig into that.  Now, I’ll be the first to say that every once and a while... I do a deep dive on a subject that might not be for everyone.  BUT this one is for more people than you might expect.

If you listen to DREAM THINK DO, I'm guessing you may have thought about it.  If you’re wanting to dream bigger, think better and do more of what you’re put on the planet to do… then… there’s a really good chance you’d like to see others do that too!  So, if you’ve had that feeling… it’s possible you’d make an amazing coach.  AND… many should become coaches… BUT… not all.

That’s why I’m doing this episode. I'm going to take you behind the scenes of the coaching industry and I'm going to be straight up with you as I answer some common questions I get about who should become a life coach, business coach or success coach.

I’ll shoot straight with you about the industry and WHO would be a good fit... and have a chance to really make an IMPACT and... quite possibly... some serious INCOME from it.

And.... who I’ll also share who I think shouldn't try to become a life coach too.  It’s going to be a fun… eye-opening… truth filled conversation and I can’t wait to get started.  So, let’s do this!!!

FREE TRAINING: 3 Hours to $3K Masterclass

MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Why are we talking about whether you should/could become a life coach… NOW?

Well… like I said, in the introduction, LOTS of people are wanting a change.

There are a LOT of things contributing to this… but if 44% of the workforce are now considering themselves “job seekers,” there’s a very good chance that MANY of them  are wanting to do something more meaningful.  Something that’s more true to their purpose

And if YOU are wanting more purpose from your work… there’s a chance that you’d love to help OTHER PEOPLE find more purpose and fulfillment too.

So, one of the things that pops to some people's lists is life coaching.

They might think about hiring their own life coach, but they might also be asking, "I wonder if I should become a life coach?"

But let’s be honest… right from the start!  Some might wonder if it's a scam or a get-rich-quick scheme?

  • NOTE: You can make a LOT of money as a coach but that's NOT the reason to get into it.
  • There are a few BAD coaches out there… BUT what industry do you know that doesn't include a few bad apples who screw things up for everyone?
  • That's why I like to set the record straight... and try to do our part to make things right!

If you wonder whether being a life coach or a success coach is legitimate:

  • You can now get your Masters and your Ph.D. in coaching...
    • NOTE: Although I don't recommend that and I'll tell you why more in a bit.
  • BUT just the fact that you can get advanced degrees in coaching proves it's needed and that a LOT of people are seeking help!

FREE TRAINING:

We have some new free training coming up... because I really do want to help people who feel called to become a life coach to keep moving forward with confidence.

BUT I really do want to scare the wrong people away from becoming a coach...

So let's get started!

I often get asked, “SHOULD I BECOME A LIFE COACH?”

Good question: Is becoming a life coach ideal for you?

More specifically, here are some of the most common questions I get around the idea of becoming a life coach:

  • What does a life coach actually do?
  • Should I get certified as a life coach and/or do certifications matter?
  • Are there too many life coaches and/or is the coaching market saturated?
  • What are some of the things that keeps people from becoming successful life coaches?

Question 1: What does a Life Coach actually do?

The question seems to be, "What do SUCCESSFUL life coaches actually do?"

Because we've all seen those people who seem to be all talk in regards to being a coach, but you're just not sure what they actually do.

When someone is curious about this and they’re asking about what a success coach actually does… I ask THEM a question that usually shocks them:

"Are you willing to shut up?"

Yup.  That sets people back a bit… but it’s important to ask… especially if someone is wanting to be an EFFECTIVE and SUCCESSFUL Life Coach.

Here’s why: As a coach… it’s good to have systems and processes in place. BUT as a foundation, I believe in a "question-based approach."

What I mean is... I'm going to bring a VAST MAJORITY of my value to my clients by ASKING QUESTIONS... as opposed to TELLING them what to do.

The main reason for this approach is something I call:

 "The Intellectual Immune System"

This is based on the idea that we tend to reject things / ideas that come from outside us and we tend to embrace things that come from within.

Think of a time when you got advice… and you eventually rejected it… because it came from outside you.  Maybe it was advice from a parent, a manager, a friend, a mother-in-law or a complete stranger.  You knew it was good advice… but you just couldn’t move forward… because it just wasn’t YOU!  Been there?  I sure have!

For me… as a Coach… I work with talented... successful people... and most of the time... they know 90% of what they need to do... they just need a safe place to acknowledge that.

Plus, they need a safe place to talk through the ideas... vet those ideas... and vent... and bitch and moan a bit!  We're human.  It's needed!

And for the other 10%... I always say, "We'll figure it out together."

As a life coach, my job is to ask questions and create an environment where we can get to their genius.  Now... a key here is: You need/have to:

 "Hold people as capable."

Some people get into coaching because they can't wait to tell everyone THEIR answers.  BUT... we all know how THAT goes over.  That's why they're not often very successful.

People will feel it… if you believe in them… if you believe they can do it... and they often RISE to that.

SIDE NOTE: This applies to LEADERSHIP and PARENTING too!!!

So... are you willing to ask some questions and then shut up?

If so... there's a very good chance you could be an awesome coach!

QUESTION 2: Should I get certified as a life coach and/or do certifications matter?

The big question behind the question here is: “What is a life coaching certification for and what is it NOT for?

IDEALLY: A well-designed life coaching certification is something that's going to make you more confident and more effective as a coach.  Helping you… so you can help your clients achieve CLARITY… and help them get to their GOALS more quickly.

IT IS NOT: A marketing tool or strategy.  Meaning… don’t get a life coaching certification to sell your coaching.  Nope.

Here’s the straight scoop.  I'm not “anti-coaching certification.”  Heck... I actually created a coaching certification called “The Coach Mindset” and it’s helped thousands of coaches around the world.  So, I believe in getting you the training and the tools you need to be a confident and a competent coach!

BUT... I'll be the first one to say that the only people who seem to ask whether I'm certified are other coaches.

I've never been asked by a potential coaching client whether I'm certified or not.

Why?  Because they just want to know whether I can help them or not.  They don't care about a piece of paper on the wall.  They want to know can I help them break through the junk... and achieve what they want to do?

So... if you want to grow in your confidence as a coach... find a program that's a great fit for you!  But don’t invest in a coaching training program because you think THAT accomplishment will wow potential clients.  It won’t.  Much like adding letters behind your name JUST to impress people doesn’t tend to work either.  (Sorry… not sorry!)

It’s the WORK that makes a difference.  It’s whether you can help someone get the job done that moves the needle!  So, invest in a training program that helps you DO THE WORK!  Don’t invest in a program because you think it’s fancy title or HUGE investment will impress people.

Make sense?  I’m hoping so.

One more side note on this before we move on.

If you’re looking for a training program,  I'd also really recommend that you find a life coach certification that includes BUSINESS training... as well as coaching training.

Because… to be honest... most people who are attracted to the idea of coaching find that the coaching strategies come more easily to them.  They'll be quick to say they need MORE help on the business-building side... than they do on the coaching side.

But MOST coaching programs don't include business training... so be really careful there!!!  In fact, that’s something Brendon Burchard asked me about when he interviewed me about my work with Life Coaches and Success Coaches.

QUESTION 3: Is the Life Coaching market saturated?

I’ll sometimes get the question: Are there too many life coaches out there?

Let me first run some stats by you:

  • There are 328+  million people in the US
  • There are 445+ million people in the European Union
  • There are 1.4+ billion people in India
  • There are roughly 8 billion people in the world

8 BILLION people.  That’s so big… it’s hard to get your head around.  That’s a LOT of people.  Now, I’ll be the first to say that not all of those people need coaching and/or not all of those people can afford coaching.

EVERYONE would benefit from working with a good life coach, but let’s be real.

Let’s not say 50%... or 25%... let’s just do the math on 2% of those people.  Let’s say that 2% of people want a coach.  That’s still around 160 million people.  (Think about that number.  If you took all the people that live in Los Angeles, New York City and London… that would just be 21 million people!  So 160 million people is a LOT of people!)

And… at the same time… depending on your coaching rates... most coaches can have a REALLY profitable coaching practice with 10 clients at a time.

You can make $100K a year with 10 clients (or less) a month!

And A LOT of coaches coach on the side.

I know successful people that kept getting those "Can I pick your brain" requests.

So they decided to get trained up as coaches and they sell their services now and make extra $3K to $10K a month from that.  Heck, one of the members of our coach’s mastermind made an extra $50K in one month… coaching on the side of his job as a health care administrator.  How cool is that?

So there’s a LOT of ways to do this.

Here’s my best insight on the question of whether there are too many coaches in the world.  Ready?

As you become a Life Coach, your true competition won’t be other coaches.

Nope.  Not at all.  The biggest competition is the: “COUCH!”

That’s right!

As a Life Coach... the BIGGEST competition isn't other coaches... the biggest competition is the "couch."  It's distraction.  It's "going grey."  It's all the things that cause people to tune out, to go numb, to settle. That's the biggest competitor.

So, you will need to find ways to inspire and equip people to break free and to want more.  THEN... you can help them to clarify what they actually want and help them to achieve it.

Want another BIG shocker from behind the curtain?

The vast majority of the people who hire me as their coach haven't been "coach shopping."  They haven’t been googling coaches and then decide on me because of a certification I completed.

Nope, they've either been consuming my content for a while and say to themselves, "When I finally invest in a coach... Mitch is my guy."

Or they're referred to me by people who consumes my content or by past clients.

So if you commit to helping people... the right clients will find you!  You can find ways to put out content that’s true to you… content that helps people in big or small ways… and clients will find you!

And yes… I have a long-standing podcast… but my first paying client came from one of my first blog posts I ever wrote!  A friend forwarded it to him and said READ this.  And that person reached out immediately to get some help!

This is what gets me fired up and moving forward.  Because I don’t want people to live lives that are less than they were supposed to live or experience.  I want people to find their jam… and rock that thing!  That drives me.

I don't compete with other coaches.  I compete with how I performed yesterday.

So, some questions I often ask myself are:

  • Am I finding new ways to serve?
  • Am I finding innovative ways to help?
  • Am I growing... if YES?  Then game on... let's go!

If I get caught up in looking at other coaches... or what the world would call "my competition" then I'm toast.  I'm not going to be good to anyone!

Who's with me on THAT?  COMPETE with the YOU from yesterday... and that will keep you growing!

QUESTION 4:

What are some of the things that keeps people from becoming successful life coaches?

This is a big question because people want to be successful.  So, it makes sense that they’re curious about what might get in the way of success!

It won’t surprise you but part of the answer goes back to the things we've already talked about:

  • Thinking they have to have all the answers!!!
  • Getting TOO much training and getting caught up in that rat race!
  • Disqualify themselves because they caught up in looking around instead of looking forward.

But when I talk about one of the BIGGEST "ditches" that potential coaches often fall into… it surprises people.

That is: they're not willing to get paid!

Now... you might think I'm crazy but hang with me here!

Many of the people I talk to that are interested in becoming a life coach are natural encouragers.  They're the safe place that people come to to hash out ideas, vent or dream big!

Heck... if you’re one of these people… and there’s a good chance you are… maybe you've even had someone say, "Wow.  Why am I telling you this?  I don't tell anyone this."

Maybe people have joked you’re like a “bartender” because they just tell you stuff!  Or… you have people seek you out because they want to ask you questions, or share ideas or celebrate a big win.

Co-workers… friends… family members.  They seek you out!

And if that’s you… maybe encouraging people comes easy to you.

AND… If it comes naturally to you... you tend to dismiss it's value.

Seriously… if you've always done it... it's easy to think EVERYONE does it.  So... you devalue it.

SO... some people wind up having trouble with the thought of being paid thousands of dollars for doing something they've always done!

NOW... I would argue that with training... you add to your natural gifting and take it to the next level... BUT still... people often wrestle with getting paid really well for something they'd do for free!

BUT... I'd argue the FEE is necessary!

Sure... it puts food on your table and a roof... (hopefully a very nice roof) over your head.  BUT the fee also helps to bring a level of commitment for the client.

They have skin in the game. They're committed.

It’s funny… but the person I mentioned that generated $50K in one month was in this category.  When we first started working together… the most he’d made was about $500.  But we started to work together to tweak his mindset and some of his systems and almost instantly… he had his first $5K Client.

Not only was he blown away by getting paid more of what he was worth… BUT he also found that his clients were soooo much more committed to the process!

Now... I charge thousands for my packages and I tell them... it's as much for them as it is for me!  Because if they’re willing to invest in themselves… that means they’re all in and it’s go time!

So... ask yourself, "Are you willing to get paid well for something you love to do?"

QUESTION 5: What do I need to have in place to be a life coach?

We’ll keep this one short.

As a new life coach as well as successful life coach with a sustained practice, you just need a few things:

  • Good training (Focuses on Coaching AND Business!)
  • A good community
  • A personal willingness to experiment (and learn as you go)!
  • Belief you can do it.

RESOURCES I POINT TO IN THE EPISODE:

I mention my interview with Sam Griffin when I’m talking about how bravery isn’t necessarily what you want to lean on when you experience fear. www.mitchmatthews.com/118

I also speak to a concept that Jim Collins spoke to in his classic book, Good to Great.  It’s called the “Stockdale Paradox” and it’s something I’ve leaned on myself when I was stepping out and pursuing something new.  But it’s also something I’ve taught countless leaders when I’ve discussed the importance of taking a stand for something you believe in and being willing to take a chance on a needed change.  #priceless

Here’s an excerpt from Jim’s amazing book and his interview with POW survivor and entrepreneurial success story Jim Stockdale:

I didn’t say anything for many minutes, and we continued the slow walk toward the faculty club, Stockdale limping and arc-swinging his stiff leg that had never fully recovered from repeated torture. Finally, after about a hundred meters of silence, I asked, “Who didn’t make it out?”

“Oh, that’s easy,” he said. “The optimists.”

“The optimists? I don’t understand,” I said, now completely confused, given what he’d said a hundred meters earlier.

“The optimists. Oh, they were the ones who said, ‘We’re going to be out by Christmas.’ And Christmas would come, and Christmas would go. Then they’d say, ‘We’re going to be out by Easter.’ And Easter would come, and Easter would go. And then Thanksgiving, and then it would be Christmas again. And they died of a broken heart.”

Another long pause, and more walking.

Then he turned to me and said, “This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

To this day, I carry a mental image of Stockdale admonishing the optimists: “We’re not getting out by Christmas; deal with it!”

Whew… yup!  That’s gold.

Jamie Winship was an award-winning Metro DC police officer who went on to spend nearly 30 years living and working in some of the most dangerous conflict zones in the world.  His unconventional efforts to bring about societal and racial reconciliation has led him to Indonesia, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, Israel and now back to the United States.  Jamie calls this unique approach to healing and breakthrough the “Identity Method.”  He’s utilized it to connect people you’d never think would be open to working together.  But he’s also used it to help professional sports teams, business leaders, government officials, non-profit organizations and many others.  As you’ll hear in this incredible conversation… this simple process can be used to help bring people together… but just as importantly… individuals can utilize these steps to walk in more freedom, uncover more of their true identity… AND live with less fear… even in turbulent times.  This one blew me away… and I think you’ll love it.  So let’s get to it!

Jamie Winship spent nearly 30 years living and working in conflict zones, and during that time he has learned an important truth: all human conflict originates from fear, and fear originates from a false view of God, ourselves, and others.

Until we exchange what's false for what's real, we will never experience being fully alive, fully human, and fully free.  During our conversation… we dive deep into the Identity Exchange Method as Jamie tells an incredible story of how it played out (and brought healing) in a surprising way within a group of people most would say would NEVER work together!

Guys… I’m so excited to introduce you to my friend Joe Van Haecke.  For over 20 years, Joe has studied, performed, and coached improv.  Now… in addition to performing improv… he’s bringing what he calls the tenets of the “Yes/And” life to business people, educators, leaders… and heck… even lawyers!  His training company helps people to be better communicators… better collaborators… and stronger leaders… all through the power and simplicity of improv strategies. And a recent experience over coffee with Joe, made me say… we’ve got to talk about this on DREAM THINK DO!  So, let’s get to this!!!

Okay… let’s get YOUR thoughts.  What do you think?  Does the thought of IMPROV freak you out?  Or… do you find yourself wanting to hop on a stage and “Yes/And” with the best of ‘em light you up?

I’ll be honest… I can totally see the power of these strategies… but the idea of performing LIVE scares the snots out of me.  (But that probably means I need to do it sometime soon… right?)

How about it?  What’s something that resonated with you?

More importantly… where’s an area where you’re going to try to inject some IMPROV technics into your daily life?  Leave a comment and let us know!!!  I can’t wait to hear from YOU!

Travis Crutcher is back as my guest… and THIS time we’re talking about how important the concept of “Personal Branding” needs to be to EVERYONE right now.  No matter what you do for work… whether you own your own business or you work for someone else… personal brand matters.  AND… let’s be real… personal brand… at least how we’re going to define it… matters in LIFE too.  Now, we’re not talking about trying to be famous or to go all Cardasian.  What we’re talking about is how do you present yourself to the world?  And we’re going to talk about heart stuff… mental stuff… business strategy and life strategy and I think you’re going to dig it!  Especially if you’re wanting to make an impact on the world in some small or big way.  With your career… your business and… or… your life!  And hey… if you’re listening to DREAM THINK DO… I know that’s true for you!

Now, I’m going to be talking with my friend Travis Crutcher for this episode.  You may remember from episode 344… but Travis is a Success Coach and Speaker who helps dynamic people get clarity, increase impact, and live a life they love!  He’s a Retired Army Ranger and he spent some time in the corporate space as an executive too. After all of that… he launched his coaching and speaking business and I’m VERY proud to say that he’s a key member of Acceleration… my mastermind for coaches and speakers.  And that’s given me a front-row seat to see him applying the concepts we’re going to be talking about in his business and more importantly… he’s also using them to make the world a better place!

Oh… and make sure you listen to the very end… because even though my bride Melissa isn’t “officially” on this episode… I tell a story about her that Travis and I agreed… allowed her to steal the show!  So yeah… stay with it!  I think you’re going to dig it… so let’s dive in!

We’re answering a great question from a fellow DREAM THINK DO listener this week.  He asked, “As a Success Coach… what’s one of the most important questions you ask people?”  Whew.  I love that and… as you’ll hear… I get pretty fired up to answer it.

In fact, the question that we dig into is one that you can use to get more clear, build your confidence and help you to stay inspired.  But it’s also a question you can use at work with your teams, your co-workers and… heck, even with leaders above you.  Plus, you can use it with your family and friends too.

I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to over-hype this question… but seriously… it’s THAT powerful!  And it’s sooooooo important to ask (in multiple scenarios)!  So get excited.  Let’s dive in!

Lots of questions come in... especially after episode 346 - RESET WEEK - where I said we'd be spending MOST of our upcoming episodes on:

  • The Abundant Life Playbook
  • The Elite Coach Playbook
  • The Growing Business Playbook

By the way… if you’d like to ask a question and/or give me a suggestion for topics for future DREAM THINK DO episodes, be sure to leave a comment!

One recent question really applies to BOTH the “Abundant Life Playbook” and the “Elite Coach Playbook,” is:  "As a coach... what's one of the most important questions you ask?"

THIS IS A GREAT QUESTION!  And I couldn’t help myself but dive into it!  And as you can imagine… since I’ve been a full-time coach for almost 20 years… I have a lot of favorite questions.  BUT one of my favorites and one of the most important has to be:

“What does success look like”

This is a powerful question if you're a coach or a mentor.  This is a powerful question if you're a leader or a manager.  This is a powerful question if you're a parent or a friend.  It even is important to ask in a romantic relationship.  So yeah… as you can see… it’s a favorite!

It’s a great question to ask others… but it’s also a great question to ask yourself as you’re journaling, meditating, and praying.

I love this question because it's MACRO and it's MICRO:

  • MACRO - Large scale... EVERYTHING... All-encompassing… BIG PICTURE.
  • MICRO - Minute by minute... the small stuff... the little but important stuff… day-to-day!

Are you sold?  I hope so.  So let’s dive in!

MACRO-LEVEL EXAMPLES:

Let’s talk about some examples of “MACRO” versions of this question.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE FOR:

  • This year?
  • This season of my career?
  • My team... this year?
    • [NOTE: You can sure talk to your team about this and ask THEM too!]

You can use this question as you consider the different ROLES you have in life:

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE FOR:

  • For me as a parent?
  • For me as a spouse?  (If you’re dating… What does success look like in this relationship?)
  • For me as a leader?
  • For me as a volunteer?
  • For me as a team member?

It can also be a question to ask yourself… when it comes to the way you want to live life:

What does success look like for how I want to LIVE?

Now… let’s talk about the question at a MICRO LEVEL:

As in… how can you apply it TODAY?  How can you use it to help guide you a moment to moment… today?

I like to add the “Rule of 3” here to drill down to some specifics.  So I simply add “three things” to the question.

For example:

What are 3 things that would make today a success?

If I journal that… I might come up with things like:

  • Engage well with others.
  • Stay present.
  • Focus and get XYZ done.
  • Have gas left in the tank for my family tonight
  • To have FUN as I work today.
  • To show people gratitude throughout the day.
  • To bring my best work as often as possible.

Then… I’d pick the 3 most important for that day.

Or another example is if you’re prepping for a hard conversation, you might ask:

What are 3 things that are within my control that would make this conversation a success?

You might come up with things like:

  • I will be prepared.
  • I will show the person I love/honor/respect them... no matter what (even in a business situation)
  • I'm ready to share my perceptions and I'm open to theirs.

Another example is I recently hired a new VA.  So… I asked myself, "What are 3 things that would make my new team member’s onboarding a success?"

Some things I came up with were:

  • Help her to feel welcomed.
  • Help her to know we believe in her.
  • Help her to know what success looks like.  (Ironic… right? LOL!)

THIS makes for a great prayer too.  Some of my favorite questions as I pray are:

Lord... what do you want me to know... today?

Lord.. what do you want me to do… today?

Lord… what does success look like... today?

NOTE: The topic of favorite questions I ask during prayer could TOTALLY be its own episode.  So, if you dig that or you’d want me to dig into that more... leave a comment or send me an email and let me know!

TIME TO TAKE ACTION:

Where do you want to apply this question... this week?

  • Work?
  • Life?
  • Relationships?
  • Volunteering?
  • Leadership?
  • Entrepreneurship?
  • Family?

Go big... and ask a MACRO QUESTION or two.

Then be sure to go MICRO too… and experiment with the “Rule of 3” to bring it to something specific... today.

Have you ever thought about launching your own podcast?  You’ve got a topic you’re passionate about or a group of people you really feel called to help… and you’ve wondered, “Should I start a podcast?”  Well… if that’s you (or you just curious about some of the behind-the-scenes on the podcast industry) THIS episode is for you!  By the way… should everyone start a podcast?  The answer is NO!  An emphatic no!  BUT more people should start a podcast than you might think!  We’ll talk about WHO should think about launching a podcast and we’ll talk about HOW to get one started (it’s easier than you might think).  Plus, we’ll help you to beat out 85% of all podcasts almost immediately!  Oh, and since this is episode 350… we’ll also reminisce a bit.  We’ll dig into some of my favorites and some fun behind-the-scenes stories that have gotten us here!  So let’s get to this!

Some Surprising Stats on Starting a Podcast:

At this time, there are still less than 3 million podcasts worldwide, BUT there are over 37 million YouTube channels, and over 1 billion blogs.  (Yeah… that’s BILLION… with a “b.”)

According to Edison Research... about 65 to 75% of Americans have heard a podcast.

  • 37% of the US listens on a monthly basis
  • 28% of the US Population Listen to Podcasts on a Weekly Basis
  • 70% of all podcasts are listened to via Apple Podcasts

Get this… ONLY 15% of new podcasts make it to 11 episodes.  And only 15% of those podcasts will make it to 100 episodes!  BUT... the longer you stay in... the better the chance you have of finding your audience and thriving!

5 Tips for Starting A Podcast:

  1. Start with WHO
  2. Start small… but start!
  3. Go in with a STARTER PLAN… but commit to figure most things out as you go!
  4. Research for your INTRO and 3 questions!
  5. Honor your Guests and make them feel safe
